The Columbia History of the British NovelHis most recent book is Between Self and World: The Novels of Jane Austen, and he is currently completing a study of the origins of the novel and political economy. David Trotter is Quain Professor of English Language and Literature at University College, London. Among his publications are The Making of the Reader: Language and Subjectivity in Modern American, English and Irish Poetry, Circulation: Defoe, Dickens and the Economies of the Novel, and The English Novel in History 1895–1920. James Grantham Turner is Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to editing Politics, Poetics and Hermeneutics in Milton's Prose and Sexuality and Gender in Early Modern Europe: Institutions, Texts, Images, he has written The Politics of Landscape: Rural Scenery and Society in English Poetry, 1630–1660 and One Flesh: Paradisal Marriage and Sexual Relations in the Age of Milton.
