Описание:The fourfold purpose of this study was to determine if (1) student attitudes toward community service, (2) student attitudes toward civic involvement, (3) student attitudes about life skills, and (4) student attitudes toward civic engagement and service learning differed based on enrollment in a course with a service learning component or enrollment in a course without a service learning component. Research questions were answered using an academic course evaluation questionnaire, student life skills self-evaluation, a writing sample, and reflection papers (service learning only). The study was conducted at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona using two groups enrolled in an English 102 course: (1) 23 students (10 males and 13 females) with service learning, and (2) 16 students (8 males and 8 females) without service learning. A related purpose for students enrolled in a course with a service learning component was to determine if the service learning component had an impact on students’ future educational or career plans.

Thanks For The Memories

The article begins, stating the widely held view that "…U.S. government scientists, spurred on by reports that American prisoners of war were being brainwashed in North Korea, were proposing an urgent, top-secret research program on behavior modification. Drugs, hypnosis, electroshock, lobotomy — all were to be studied as part of a vast U.S. effort to close the mind-control gap." At the time this article appeared, congressional inquiries were being held to examine new disclosures about government experiments that had intentionally exposed American citizens to radiation. The article continues, "But the radiation experiments are only one facet of a vast cold war research program that used thousands of Americans as guinea pigs." And, "From the end of World War II well into the 1970's, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Defense Department, the military services, the CIA and other agencies used prisoners, drug addicts, mental patients, college students, soldiers, even bar patrons, in a vast range of government-run experiments to test the effects of everything from radiation, LSD and nerve gas to intense electric shocks and prolonged "sensory deprivation." Note the portrayal of this activity as a «vast» governmental effort ...»

Student Assessment in the Context of Quality. One Community College's Journey
This interpretive case study explores the interplay between student assessment, quality improvement, and institutional effectiveness through one community college' s interesting and challenging journey. The U. S. community college faces unique challenges in the assessment of student learning due, in part, to its comprehensive mission and its diverse program offerings. The large array of majors and programs of study reflect the competing missions within community colleges, and produce varied and distinctive student goals and intentions. Historically, student development theory led to measurement of both cognitive and behavioral student outcomes and associated program reviews. More recently continuous quality improvement principles have been applied to measure student learning and evaluate institutional effectiveness.

Community College Composition Instructors' Choices of Readings. The Importance of Context
In this qualitative study of northern California Community college composition instructors, the author begins to build a grounded theory of the factors that influence composition instructors' choices of readings—an infrequently examined yet significant part of the practice of teaching composition. This work is framed by contemporary theoretical discussions in the college composition discipline, namely those concerning the marginalized status of contingent composition workers and the “post-process” movement—infused with critical pedagogy and the post-positivism of postmodern theories. A careful analysis of data—surveys, interviews, and syllabi—reveals that several complex factors influence instructors' choices of readings.
