Results of this study suggest that the ability to come to terms with difficulties in the family of origin is related not only to the resource factors available for the individuals struggling but also to the resources utilized by their partners/spouses. Males were more likely than females to have come to terms with difficulties experienced in their families, while females were more likely than males to believe that there was still something from their family experience that they were struggling with. Some vulnerabilities associated with coming to terms may have been: depression, neuroticism, contempt, stonewalling, flooding, and being negative in relating to others. Results showed that individuals may have utilized several factors (being autonomous, agreeable, flexible, spiritual, loving, empathetic, etc. ) to help come to terms with difficulties in their families. This study showed that individuals who reported healthier family experiences and those who had come to terms with difficult experiences had higher relationship/marital quality than those who reported less healthy experiences and had not come to terms with them.

Perceptions of Compassion within an Acute Care Setting Compassion within the Nurse-Patient Relationship. Nurses' and Older Adult Patients'
Using Schwart- Barcott and Kim' s (2000) Hybrid Model of Concept Development, an analysis of the concept of compassion from a review of theological, psychological, medical, and nursing literature was combined with interviews with nurses and older adult patients to more clearly articulate the concept from theoretical and empirical perspectives. In addition to identifying nursing behaviors that more clearly explicated the meaning of compassion within nurse- patient relationships, findings indicated that both nurses and patients consider compassion an essential element in nursing care that affirms, protects, and respects patients. Compassion within the Nurse Patient Relationship: Although frequently found in the literature, the researcher found no clear conceptualization of compassion. Increasingly, however, patients, families, and healthcare professionals describe experiences that demonstrate a lack of compassion. The Judeo-Christian heritage of the Good Samaritan or the legacy of the compassionate stranger has been cited as a significant factor in the development of nursing and medicine in the U. S. and other countries.
