Описание:Research questions included: (a) What were the perceptions of the preservice music teachers as to the value of the orientation class in preparation for fieldwork? (b) What were the perceptions of preservice music teachers of their experience as one-on-one teaching assistants during their fieldwork experience in elementary general music classes for students with special needs? (c) What were the perceptions of preservice music teachers of their experience assisting and teaching students with special needs during their fieldwork experience in elementary general music classes for students with special needs? (d) How did the participants respond to the assigned writing activities that were utilized to promote reflective thinking? (e) What were the teacher educator' s perceptions about a special needs fieldwork placement for preservice music educators? (f) What were the advantages and disadvantages of this collaboration articulated by the inservice cooperating teacher? A particularistic case study design (Merriam, 1998) was used in this investigation. Data included preservice teacher journals and student-written cases, a researcher journal, participant interviews, observations and an orientation session video. Findings suggested: (a) The orientation process to fieldwork with children with disabilities, which included the case method of teaching, was perceived as valuable; (b) Observations occurred on multiple levels; (c) Observation, journaling, discussion, and the relationships that emerged were important to the participants; (d) Reflective practice may have occurred in this study. Document includes stories of the participants, a model of the perceived stages of observation, suggestions for future research, and further pedagogical practice are also included. Five self-contained special education classes at a public elementary school served as the fieldwork site for this study. Research shows that background, teacher training, & teaching context may shape new teachers. This study sought to discover how teachers view the influence of these factors, as well as how personal dispositions impact their practice. Essential Skills and Attitudes for Teaching Immigrant Students Educational Border Crossers.
Qualitative inquiry methods were used to guide the questions in this study: 1) What are the essential skills and attitudes of teachers who are highly effective in working with immigrant students? , 2) How do these teachers view immigrant students? , 3) In what ways do teachers incorporate immigrant students’ funds of knowledge into their classrooms? , and 4) How have these teachers’ own schooling experiences impacted their ideology in the classroom? The study includes recommendations for teacher selection, teacher education programs, professional development, and culturally responsive curriculum to increase teacher effectiveness in working with immigrant students. Only when children who are linguistically and culturally different are truly valued, will educational reform measures work. Teachers who affirm immigrant students’ cultures, linguistic assets and lived experiences and who are open to learning about different ways of knowing can be the most successful with immigrant students.

Why Don' t More Rural Students Make It to College? Rural Students, Aspiration, Motivation, and Music Education.
The examined the influence of participation in high school choral music classes and aesthetic experiences on a group of high school students' postsecondary aspirations. Choral music students had developed a broader social understanding through their performance travels to places such as New York City. Themes and commonalities between responses were examined. Connectedness to peers was achieved through participation in sports and other extracurricular activities, such as choral music. Students discussed their need to feel connected to the school through relationships with teachers and coaches. Their feedback indicated they had a stronger understanding of the aesthetic experiences than students without choral music experience. Through their choral music experiences and their shared aesthetic experiences, students developed connections to their director and each other. All of the participants in the study spoke of their experiences with aesthetics, with the choral music students having the greatest ease and facility discussing their experiences.
