Описание:A modified version of the NSSE instrument that evaluates on-campus engagement is used to measure student engagement in online learning. Responding to an increasing demand for greater accountability in higher education, student engagement has become a prominent and acceptable assessment of collegiate quality. The Internet and the World Wide Web have transformed delivery systems and methodologies in education through online learning. The study details the level of engagement against key engagement benchmarks, uncovers a number of distinctive engagement patterns in sub-groups, and discusses the relationship of the student’s level of satisfaction with the entire educational experience.

Whereas wisdom comes through humility, it may actually help, in cultivating intelligence, to have a mistakenly high opinion of your abilities, because that encourages you to keep working. Ideally till you realize how mistaken you were. (The reason it's hard to learn new skills late in life is not just that one's brain is less malleable. Another probably even worse obstacle is that one has higher standards.) I realize we're on dangerous ground here. I'm not proposing the primary goal of education should be to increase students' "self-esteem." That just breeds laziness. And in any case, it doesn't really fool the kids, not the smart ones. They can tell at a young age that a contest where everyone wins is a fraud. A teacher has to walk a narrow path: you want to encourage kids to come up with things on their own, but you can't simply applaud everything they produce. You have to be a good audience: appreciative, but not too easily impressed. And that's a lot of work. You have to have a good enough grasp of kids' capacities at different ages to know when to be surprised ...»

Information Technology Certification's Impact on Student Engagement. The Effect of Instructor IT Certification on Undergraduate Student Classroom Perceptions
It was found that undergraduate CIS/IT students are very aware of their instructor' s professional credentials and may be more motivated and engaged when attending classes taught by instructors they view as more competant and effective. In Information Technology programs, voluntary professional certifications, generally known in the Information Technology field as “IT” certifications, are used as indicators of professional skill. An investigation of undergraduate CIS/IT student perceptions of IT industry certified instructors at regionally accredited private and public institutions indicates that the presence or absence of IT certification credentials for instructors affected student perceptions of instructor effectiveness, teaching methodology, student engagement in the class, and to a lesser degree, instructor technical qualifications.

Teaching Economics From a Learner-Centered Perspective. In Enhancing Students’ Motivation for learning and achievement
The writing of this book' s work is based on evidence that suggests that motivation, learning, and achievement are highly enhanced where learner- centered principles and practices are in place. The purpose of this book is to explore the use of learner-centered teaching (LCT) in the teaching of an introductory economics class. The study showed that if a teacher is able to build a nurturing and caring classroom environment, students would reciprocate by working hard and taking responsibility for their learning. The quest to reform America’s education system has been at the forefront of educators’, policymakers’ and researchers’ efforts since 1983s Nation at Risk. Both educators and researchers have realized that educational practices need to be completely transformed and that a research-based framework should guide their reform efforts. One area where educational practices need to be completely transformed is in the teaching of economics. In recent years, the quality of economics instruction has received consistently poor reviews by undergraduate students across the United States.

Beating the Doctoral Dropout Rate. An Integrated Learning Community of Students, Professors, and Professionals Creates Success
It doesn’t have to be. Sarah Church became fascinated by the Mock Orals program at St. John' s University in New York, which produced a startlingly higher completion rate. From 1991 to 2006, 87. 5% of matriculated students graduated. Dr. Church’s fascination grew into a study, reported, here, of the components of the program and the reasons for its positive effects on student completion rates. Academic, social, and professional integration for the students at all stages of the degree process is the key to the program’s success. Students benefit not only from the rehearsal of their oral defense presentations, but also from the regular gathering of all levels of students, graduates, faculty, and professionals for the rehearsals. Dr. Church offers this to all institutions concerned about increasing their rates of doctoral graduation. The troubling secret in higher education is that approximately 50% of doctoral students drop out before graduating.

Is the Virtual Classroom for Everyone? Achievement, Attitude, and Learning Style in Online Courses.
These students' attitudes toward computer-based learning and their learning-style preferences were examined to note existing relationships among the variables as they relate to overall performance in respective courses. Significant findings revealed that certain learning-style preferences correspond to greater satisfaction and improved performance in online courses, which provides some explanation as to why individuals may be more successful than others in online courses. The study provides implications for improved practice in customizing online and in-class courses to meet students' needs. It is also noted that these findings, when applied, may help to raise student awareness of their own learning styles, increase retention at various levels of higher- education, and enhance the delivery of advisement based on learning-style assessment.
